Correct, GM describes the unit as having locking and limited slip features. The reason GM does not recommend adding a friction modifier, the Limited Slip Additive, is because the fluid already contains it. I had old bottles that said it contained the additive and the new ones don't say anything. Same part numbers and new part numbers.
Jimmiee. 2274 posts · Joined 2009. #2 · Aug 13, 2009. The good news is all 3 units take 75-90 Synthetic Gear Lube. The front diff and transfer case have a drain plug which is easy. The rear diff requires R&R of the cover. Just buy a tube of High Temp Black Silicone Sealer for the rear diff. Make sure to scrape all the old gasket off the cover ...

The amount of fluid that I removed was ~2.25 quarts, and the fluid I put back in was ~3.25 quarts. I put fluid in until it ran out the fill plug.

In the opening thread statement you said you had a 14-Bolt Full Floater (10.5" Ring Gear), but it appears you have 14-Bolt Semi-Floater (9.5" Ring Gear) Can you clarify this. If you are unsure just measure your Ring Gear, it will either be 9.5" or 10.5". Or just look for the removable pinion support. Like.

The G86 is a high performance LSD. Because of the clutch action, the power is transfered "gently" to the wheel with the greatest traction, ideal for high hp applications. The G80 uses a locking pawl to "hard" engage the wheel with the greatest traction, exposing the diff to a lot of stress.
The G80 has the ability to "lock" the left and right axles (using a centrifugal weight activated mechanism) if the limited slip clutches need additional help. The G80 …

GM "G80" Gov-Lock diff modification. I've searched a couple places but haven't found much information on the actual workings of the Gov-lock diff. Here's what I was thinking - the way I understand things - the diff operates based upon the differential speed between the two side gears that drive the axles - when it senses about a 100 …
227 posts · Joined 2011. #3 · Aug 15, 2011. The 8.25 front diff will not handle a locker or a limited slip. Even if it did, or if you had a 9.25 front that the 2500s and 3500s had a limited slip or auto locker up front from what i read it can be problematic when driving on winter roads in 4WD because it may severely impact your steering to.

All in all the cost is running $150 for the 1997 K3500 9.25 IFS, about $100 in new bearing and seals, $750 for the E-Locker, $73 for the 1 ton CV axle (times 2) and $45 for the drive shaft shortening. About $1200 total for an electronically locked 1 ton 9.25 IFS differential retrofit on my 1997 1/2 ton truck.
I stripped the filler plug in my rear diff and ended up taking a bolt and welding it to the remains of the plug. With a little heat it backed right out. I went to the harware store and replaced it with an external square plug. Attachments. 09-03-10_1719.jpg. 198.4 KB Views: 132.
Unplug the vacuum hose on the drivers side of the diff. Unbolt the driveshaft and tie it out of the way. Remove the 2 nuts on the bracket on the passengers side of the diff. Loosen the upper mounting bolt and remove the nut, leave the bolt in place. Do the same with the lower rear mounting bolt.
Nothing really moves. If you're replacing the ring or pinion gears or the differential carrier, you have to start from the beginning for gear mesh and depth. This Tech Tip is From the …
